Dear Chimp&See-ers

The Chimp&See team has been working hard these last two months and we are officially DONE chimp matching at the Eternal Victory site. A big thank you to Heidi and Tonnie with special support from Heike as mods and the @team for getting through that site. If you want to see the whopping [82 identified chimpanzees from this site check out @Eweforia’s / Carol’s great poster

We are also happy to announce that we have added a new moderator to the team - we are so happy that Jenny / @Samburu has accepted the role and for all her incredible work on the #need_id videos! Welcome Jenny!

We also now have Sally @sp515507 working hard on leading the bird song identifications! Are you a birder, or do you know one?Join us at the bird board and join our birding group to get into all the avian action at Chimp&See!

Cascading Arches chimp matching is now open! Visit us there if you want to work on your chimpanzee identification skills and have the chance to name a chimp!

We have just under 19,000 CA MonkeySee videos to get through - it's mostly baboons, so the videos are pretty easy to annotate - why not give five a try today! Otherwise see you at Crystal Gully SpeciesID and TrottersID or catch you on Talk. 😄

Birds of a feather

If you’ve been browsing the discussion boards on Chimp&See Talk, you may have noticed there is a new species guide: Identifying Birds.  The guide is meant to serve as a starting point for those wanting to improve their ID skills for the birds we see at C&S.  I know I certainly got more acquainted with the birds we have seen while writing the guide and I feel more confident identifying species now. I hope the guide helps others to do the same!

The guide can be found in The Objects section of the Help board or simply click on the link above.

The guide groups species by broad, shared characteristics that should be discernible even to those inexperienced with bird ID (poultry-like birds, predatory birds, etc.).  There is also a list of species we most often encounter at the top of the guide, so check those descriptions first if you are uncertain where to begin.  Each species has a short physical description as well as images and links to videos from C&S to aid in identification.

Thank you to all the moderators who provided help and feedback for the guide and to everyone for their continuing efforts with the C&S project!

Chimp and See (and Hear!) #2

Sometimes, our most interesting discoveries aren’t what we see, but what we hear!  In this series of posts, we’ll share some of the fascinating sounds of Africa that we’ve heard in the Chimp & See project.

Today, we'll hear from the birds found in West & Central Africa.  Many of our video clips have at least one bird vocalizing in the background, and every once in a while we catch a glimpse of these beautiful animals.  Here are some of the unique birds we've heard during this project!

White-breasted guineafowl, Hadada ibis, Long-tailed glossy starling (2 different vocalizations), Yellow-casqued hornbill, White-crested hornbill, and Great blue turaco
